From the very first song, you know you're in for something different. CAN's first Lp is the sound of a band who already knows its way around a recording studio--the trademark hypnotic & repetitive grooves, the eerie vocals (here supplied by original vocalist Malcolm Mooney) and the tight edits of free-form jams are all here in this 4-song workout, with the best track "Yoo Doo Right" breaking the 20-minute mark. The other three are in the 6 to 7 minute range, and none has anything like a normal pop song structure--indeed, this album pre-dates Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" by well over a year in its use of careful editing to produce a unique sound collage underpinned by Jaki Liebezeit's drumming grooves.
The hybrid stereo SACD brings out a lot more punch & clarity: lots of fine sonic details that were obscured by tape hiss and Lp surface noise now add new dimensions to the music. If you liked "Soundtracks" & "Tago Mago", you will definietly want this one as well.
