Great performance by Yo-Yo Ma. Morricone tailors several of his film scores to emphasize Ma's cello. Although this SACD focuses mostly on romantic melodies (no jangling guitar or other potent music associated with the final gunfights of the Sergio Leone westerns - which I was hoping for), 've listened to this CD at least 4 times in the first day it was delivered. The performance is very tender but technically perfect.

The sonics of the SACD couldn't be better. No hiss, and the sonic image is very smooth and three-dimensional. Wonderful.

Well, This is certainly not Soundtrack Music.Best described as a set of Orchestral suites for Cello and Orchestra, with ocasional piano, harp and wordless chorus.
The original background film music is elevated to new levels by the re orchestration by the Composer and the playing of Ma elevates the orchestra to astounding levels.
Each of the individual suites are played seemlessly without breaks and could not be out of place in a normal classical concert program. The excellent recording is very much in that vein.
Overall the disc musically is heavy on emotion and romnticism ,even for a cello inspired issue but NOT cello dominated !..Even so you will be carried away with the lyrical playing of the solist.
If you are familiar with the films or have soundtrack music of this composer you will find this a totally different musical experience.
Its no wonder no one else wanted to review this hard to aquire "find" and I must admit the limited and sometimes incorrect information about it didnt help.
Possibly one of the finds of my collecting career. No one would could argue with the 5 stars after hearing it.A pleasure.
Difficult to pick a highlight but the Guiseppe Tornatore suite containg music from the very overlong Once upon time in...is thankfully almost the opposite of the 3 hour plus film.
This release begs the question, why hasnt something similair been done before.
I can now easily envisage some mediocre film music (which this is not) being taken to new heights by a violinist or cellist.
