Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade - Reiner        (3 of 17 found this review helpful)

This performance has, for me, been the best of the recorded performances until recently. I first had this performance on a 331/3 album. Then a cd. Then an XRCD, Then the SACD currently under discussion. Now, I think it has been surpassed, at least as far as the sonics and maybe the performance, by a ... more
Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture - Gergiev        (10 of 18 found this review helpful)

I would like to echo "DSD". I own many recordings of these pieces and most are FAR better, to my ears, than this disc under discussion. It sounds muffled and has little or no impact. I can't believe that John Newton engineered this recording. They hired a chorus for the "Moscow Cantata" why couldn't ... more

Please tell me that this will be released on blu-ray with multi-channel audio AND high-def. video. I am a sucker for S.F. I hope that it tops my favorite rendition which is Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra on Telarc sa-cd. Thomas and the S.F. orchestra on "keeping Score" is, to me, a VERY close second. ... more
Oppo 95 Issue

You might try hitting the "audio" button on your remote and make sure that you select the Multi-channel track. Some sacds and dvds and blu-rays, for some odd reason, will first play the 2ch. track. ... more
Planning to buy my second SACD. Any suggestions?!

I can't imagine a need that the Oppo BDP-93 or 103 can't fulfill. These units will play almost anything including sacd, dvd-audio, blu-ray including 3d, dvd includingPAL, cd and more. The ONLY drawback that I can come up with is that they are only available on-line or via phone. They are VERY easy to deal with by phone. Some have said that they are ... more
Discussion: Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4, Romeo & Juliet - Pletnev
April 20, 2011
Maestro Maazel did, in fact, add a bass drum "whack" to the opening bars of the Tchaikovsky 4th on Telarcs VERY fine recording to VERY good effect. I just received Pletnevs fourth on Pentatone and, to my ears, it is lack-luster. The T.4 is one of my favorite symphonic pieces and I own more versions than I care to admit to. My, over-all, favorite ... more
Keeping Score (San Fransisco Orchestra)
October 20, 2009
These are new recordings. They will have, hopefully, information is hard to come by, at least one of the new "lossless" codecs. I have two other older "Keeping Score" discs, Tchaikovsky Symphony # 4 and Stravinsky Rite Of Spring and excerps from the "Firebird". In my opinion they strongly rival any other recordings of these pieces. My first live ... more
