Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 - Gergiev          (7 of 9 found this review helpful)
  October 5, 2013

On the strength of the very positive reviews preceding my own here, I ordered this recording from Amazon last week. I have listened to it three times now, and can agree that in comparison with my favorite performance of the Rach 2nd, this is a very powerful performance. As a warning to those ... more
Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd: Jazz Samba        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  September 4, 2013

Bossa nova, the then new music from Brazil, made its broad American appearance in the Fall of 1962, when Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd took Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Desafinado” (from the Verve album, Jazz Samba) to # 15 on the Billboard charts. To put this unusual entry into the world of pop music into ... more
Louise Rogers: Black Coffee        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

This recording has vexed me for a few days, and I suppose that I should begin wondering if I should avoid Chesky recordings altogether. I was prompted to buy this when visiting the Chesky site since the song list had several of my favorites from the Forties and Fifties in it. The artists are all ... more
David Hazeltine: The Jobim Songbook In New York        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  July 28, 2013

I was hoping to hear a modern recording of Bossa Nova as it was performed in the 1960s, but this release doesn't do that at all. While the style of the playing heard here isn't offensive at all, it is not what one would expect to hear, simply based on its title, The Jobim Songbook in New York. ... more
Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto: Getz/Gilberto        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  July 28, 2013

I would add to the previous review that this the first instance in which it becomes obvious to the careful listener that the tape used to make this recording is beginning to show evidence of wear and tear — especially in the right channel and particularly on several of the tunes that would have ... more

Since my aging ears can't hear high frequencies, the fact that one reviewer describes its brightness is of no importance to me. The price is, however, and I just can't imagine this one might be worth $60. ... more
Steve Hoffman Tweets New 5.1 SACDs are on the way! (presumably from Audio Fidelity?)
May 26, 2014
One should note that Steve Hoffman's comments on these 5.1 reissues DOES NOT specify that there will be a STEREO SACD segment as well. He mentions only that there will be redbook stereo for those who do not own SACD players. This would imply that only those who own multi-channel players with receivers will be able to hear these releases in DSD. ... more
