Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 - Ballot        (7 of 9 found this review helpful)

First, Bravo! to JohnProffitt. This is as good an orchestral recording as I have ever heard, and I've heard thousands. It is thrilling in both its loudness and quietness. It would be worth the price just to let the beautiful sound wash over me. But this is disc is so much more than just an ... more

This is a spectacular recording of one of my favorite pieces, but not my favorite interpretation. This performance is slower and has a more melancholy feel than others. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just as some like there Beethoven light and quick and some like it slower and more ... more

This disc ROCKS! Pretty much every item on the audiophile checklist applies: present, spacious, detailed, dynamic. This is a fantastic sounding SACD of an iconic album and highly recommended.

The SACD is even better, it is everything that is good about digital: the clarity, the definition, and the convenience, with ... more

I have the Classic "Gold" CDs of both the Scottish and MSD from back in the day. To my ears the sound of both are excellent, if MSD is missing the final measure of magic present in the symphony. But back on topic, I don't know if the world needs any more Beethoven symphony reissues, but I'd love to have the Schmidt-Isserstedt VPO Beethoven in ... more

I had (actually still have, and am waiting to fix) a Marantz SA-11S1. Good sounding player but it is notorious for having a cheap laser than wears out so when my second laser started going bad about a year ago I went shopping. I *love* the Yamaha, it sounds great with RBCDs, SACDs and files via USB. I got a cheap Windows netbook and use foobar2000 ... more
